The crime ratio in Chandigarh falls to 70% due to COVID-19 outbreak

The crime ratio in Chandigarh falls to 70% due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the last two months. The higher increase in crime rates has been observed for the last few decades across the country. The crime rate is not only rising in number rather is getting more heinous eventually.  

Earlier, there were several cases for burglary, snatching, fatal road accidents, murder, attempt to murder, eve-teasing, etc. Hence, there has been a decline due to less exposure and social interactions.

The lockdown affected our economy more than anything else. However, the nationwide lockdown had its pro and cons for the society too. The major pro is the decline in the crime ratio in Chandigarh though it hasn’t bought much relief.

The Change in Crime Rate

Besides, there is an increase in other crimes like domestic violence, cyber crimes, suicide, assaults, harassment, etc.

 As the individuals must reside within their houses. The couples are being unable to bear each other and end up quarrelling leading to domestic violence. As a result, there are some divorce litigations in the court by the couples.

Similarly, there is a hike in cybercrimes in the society and cybercrime rate. For the most part, due to the lockdown, many services are being provided online. There are many companies out there claiming about delivering stuff. As a result, almost 594 complaints have been reported to the cyber cell from March 24 to May 20. In particular, most of the complaints were about cheating in delivering alcohol, books, and electronic gadgets, fraudulent withdrawal from the bank accounts, etc.

Moreover, during the lockdown, there were around 52 FIRs related to the cases of murder (2), attempt to murder (3), robbery(1), road accidents (5), dowry death (1), rape (2), snatching (6), burglary (8), etc. It shows the fall in the crime rate.

The police recently have been able to recover narcotic substances and illegal liquor from 55 people in the last two months.

Almost 210 individuals are under arrest by the police for not wearing masks while going out.

Instructions given to Chandigarh Police by authorities

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chandigarh Police have altered their patterns of basic policing to decline the crime rate.

The police must avoid the arrest of people committing a crime with punishment lesser than seven years. Particularly, the people residing in the containment zones are not to be an arrest for such a crime. Consequently, drunken driving challans have been put on hold by the administration.  

The Chandigarh Police is to maintain social distancing while performing their duties. The police make sure that every individual wears a mask. Every individual must have the Aarogya Setu app on their phones.

Attacks on our saviors

During the curfew, two incidents of attacks on police by residents have been reported. The attacks happened in containment zones such as Kacchi Colony, Dhanas, and Mani Majra. However, the offenders are yet to be arrested.
